AirAsia Charge Checked Baggage Handling Fees

Air Asia Berhad will be charging a fee RM 5 for handling each piece of checked baggage from April 21 to encourage people to travel lighter.Guest who pre-book their checked baggage at least 24 hours before departure need only pay RM 3.Checked baggage will be charged on a per piece basis to a maximum combined weight of 15 Kg.Anything over 15 Kg will be charged as excess.According to CEO of Air Asia,Datuk Tony Fernandes, the move is to help Air Asia maintain it's low fares despite the rise in fuel cost.Fuel cost is a major burden to airlines, made worse if the plane has to carry a heavy cargo which uses more fuel.Their also said, that Air Asia don't have attention to increase the fuel surcharge ,but their hope by minimal fee imposed on checked baggage the move will help them maintain the current fuel surcharge. The priority for the company is to continue offering low fares.Adding more value -added services such as express boarding,Goinsure, online booking for food,Go Holiday travel and corporate package has also helped in maintaining its low fares while contributing about 9% to airlines revenue.MAS should follow Air Asia strategy in order to reduce fuel cost to generate more revenue for company.
